Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN)

Frequently Asked Questions

Representatives from PR-COIN are happy to speak with your leadership to explain the collaborative, its expectations, and how your participation may improve outcomes and fit with organizational quality improvement goals

  1. What are the participation expectations for PR COIN?

    • PR-COIN is a learning collaborative  wherein teams advance outcomes through active application of Improvement Science methodology and tools, and cooperatively share data, outcomes, ideas, and materials, in-turn learning from one another. Member activities in general include:

    • A commitment by a Senior Leader to support your team’s full participation and site fee

    • Submit data for your JIA population, progressively increasing data submission to at least 95%

    • Submit Team Progress Reports

    • Team representation at monthly Action Period Webinars and bi-annual in person Learning Sessions in Cincinnati, OH

    • Encourage Parent/patient’s participation in action period calls and solicit their input to inform team interventions

  2. Who should be on our PR-COIN team?

    • More team members will support the effectiveness of improvements and contribute to your team’s success. The composition of the team members is at your discretion however, the expectations cited above should guide your selection of interested, enthusiastic and contributory team members including:

    • Rheumatologists

    • NPs/RNs/therapists

    • Key Contact Person

    • Data coordinator – person who can facilitate data entry into web database, who is familiar with medical record documentation and points of care

    • Parent and/or patient

    • Additional members may include multidisciplinary representatives who can effect change in the identified areas of focus for the collaborative.

  3. Will participation overwhelm our busy staff?

PR-COIN respects your valuable time and human resources.  Our web-based data entry system is “smart” so only questions related to each patient’s specific information appear. It also integrates with EPIC SmartForm and offer an electronic data transfer option for non-EPIC centers. PR-COIN participants benefit from sharing information, tools, and tips for best practices learned by others so as to minimize data collection burden and improve clinic operations and efficiency.

Please keep in mind that participation in PR-COIN also provides your team with valuable Improvement Science training.  Your entire clinic may benefit when you apply the techniques and implement ideas and improvements generated through this education which can lead to both streamlined processes and better outcomes.  PR-COIN is not adding work to your busy schedule but rather offering new ways to do your work faster, better and with greater impact.

  4. How much data must we collect?

Data is essential to measure improvement, and submission is required as part of the American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification requirements. PR-COIN provides database generated population reports thus the more patients and more clinic visits entered, the more robust and valuable the reports.  Ideally data are collected on every JIA patient seen by all rheumatologists in clinic.  This is necessary to track improvement over time across the population of patients seen, i.e. to gain an accurate and comprehensive view rather than display performance on a select group of patients.

  5. How many meetings is our team expected to attend?

Team representation is expected at monthly informational webinars wherein participants discuss successes, tools, documents, ideas and exchange tips for success. Additionally, information packed two-day Learning Sessions held twice yearly, convene participants to exchange current clinical content, network to share information, and receive training in Improvement Science methods. Check the PR-COIN website https://pr-coin.org for events and announcements.

  6. We have several patient care clinic sites; must all locations participate in PR-COIN?

No.  You may decide to start by including patients seen at any site.  This assumes patients consistently seek care at the same site so that you can implement and track improvement of patients over time.  Once your data collection system is working well at one site and your team is familiar with the improvement tools, we encourage spread of improvement methods to all sites so your patients and staff will experience better outcomes and processes no matter the location or provider.

  7. Can patients of Rheumatologists not participating in PR-COIN be enrolled if a physician or nurse who is participating in PR-COIN gets the consent?

Yes. Families give consent, not physicians.

  8. How long is PR COIN expected to continue?

PR-COIN is expanding with more teams throughout North America joining; indeed sites from around the world inquire about us! To cover expenses associated with data collection and statistical analysis, expert educational and conference offerings, website and so forth, a variety of funding supplemented by team fees is required.  As each team recommends others join PR-COIN, we expect operation will continue in perpetuity as a true, ongoing network of committed facilities.

  9. What is required to receive Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part IV credit?

Site Lead Rheumatologists and other Rheumatologists may receive MOC by meeting certain data submission and participation requirements. Consult the American Board of Pediatrics for more information, find additional information on the member only website, or contact pr-coin@seattlechildrens.org.

  10. Must all Rheumatologists at a site participate in PR-COIN, for any Rheumatologists at the site to receive Maintenance of Certification (MOC)?

No.  Only those Rheumatologists seeking MOC based on participation in PR-COIN need to fulfill the stated requirements (see the member only website or contact pr-coin@seattlechildrens.org).  Site Lead Rheumatologists may recommend only individuals participating in PR-COIN at the required level for MOC credit through PR-COIN.

  11. If a physician from a participating PR COIN site decides to participate in PR-COIN must they also enroll patients? If so, what is the minimum?

Yes, physicians receiving MOC through PR-COIN must enroll patients in the PR_COIN registry, and participate in PR-COIN QI activities to receive MOC credit.

  12. May individual institutions publish PR-COIN related QI data about their own site performance?

Yes. Institutions may publish their data and, following PR-COIN requirements, may publish concerning PR-COIN aggregate data.
